When we first move to the US, in 1997, we landed in Tallahassee, Florida’s capital. This little college town was our first experience of the American life. Not, our first time in America though. We had spent a few weeks the previous summer in New-York and Washington D.C.. What a culture shock Tallahassee was! I expected skyscrapers and tons of people in the streets! After all, Tallahassee is a capital and for us Europeans, capital cities are supposed to be large!

It took me time to adapt to the Floridian humidity, to the streets without curbs and to a downtown area with no shops but only banks and lawyer offices. But in the end,  I learned to enjoy American college football and all-you-can-eat $4.99 Chinese buffet, two staples of the American way of life.

Cream Cheese Wontons

And that’s when I discovered Cream Cheese Wontons. I found this little appetizers so fascinating. Crunchy and creamy… and fried… What’s not to like! This appetizer is a real crowd pleaser. It has been tested with kids, adults, at potlucks or for a dinner appetizer. I do not know one single person who doesn’t like it. So easy that you need only 5 ingredients and even a 10 year-old can make it. Yes, it’s that simple!

And my sauce is so much better than the sweet and sour sauce you get at the Chinese restaurant! You just mix your favorite jam (peach is my favorite) and sriracha to add some spice and voila! The perfect condiment for the perfect appetizer. Enjoy!

  1. Chop your green onions.
  2. In a medium bowl, mix your cream cheese and the green onions.
  3. Take a wonton wrapper. Wet your finger with water and run your finger around the edges. Place a tsp of the cream cheese at the center and bring two of the opposite corners to the middle. Then bring the remaining two to the middle to make a little pocket. Make sure to pinch each side carefully to avoid any leaking during frying.
  4. Deep-fry your wontons until golden brown and drain the excess oil on paper towels.
  5. Mix the jam and sriracha to your liking to make a delicious sweet and spicy dipping sauce.
Recipe Notes

You do not need to add salt to your wontons. The cream cheese has enough sodium to perfectly season them. Enjoy!
